REMEMBERING MY DAD JIM KOK's CPE DAYS AT PINE REST HOSPITAL, 1970's

GROWING UP in Grand Rapids in the 1970's up to the mid-80's my dad worked as a chaplain at Pine Rest Christian (Psychiatric) Hospital (which was founded by the Christian Reformed Church)

  At the same time he was a CPE Supervisor . CPE stands for Clinical Pastoral Education, and you most often find seminary students & graduates enrolled in it, as they seek to grow in spiritual & psychological awareness about themselves as well as others, including often patients they are assisting .

 

 I myself did it many years later  in conjunction with UCLA Medical Center when I was a student at Fuller Seminary. Most often the supervisors and students are Christian but it is open to persons of all faith as far as I know  ( & I speak not as an expert but based on memory & experience in general) .

 And this is about the "good ol days" back in Grand Rapids when dad Jim Kok was doing his job. I recently asked him (he's too humble to do such a thing himself)  for any old pictures, memos, archive material, etc that he wished to...

 ...share so that I might preserve some of the material from his days as a chaplain at Pine Rest (& later at the Crystal Cathedral, where he also continued the CPE program) .
