note: there may be a few slight "continuity" discrepancies in terms of consecutive pagination. The newsletters were scanned in bulk by an assistant but because they were 2-sided the scanner does not keep them in chronological order. Therefore putting them "back together" was like constructing a 300-piece puzzle. And since only a few limited number of people may be interested in reading these in such depth, re-paginating them perfectly was not a top priority. Nonetheless, the pagination is fairly consistent. And needless to say you get the gist of the Chaplain's Newsletters regardless. These were from Jim Kok's "Pine Rest Days" in the 70's. He worked there until 1984 when he took a new job at the Crystal Cathedral in California. Also, he did not save all the newsletters, or maybe there were gaps in publishing, not sure. This is what I found in a binder on a shelf in the garage in California. I did my best. Enjoy

Chaplain's Newsletter
The Collaboration at Pine Rest
The "Chaplain's Newsletter" (and the broader Clinical Pastoral Education program at Pine Rest) was a collaborative effort involving several key individuals who worked alongside Dr. James R. Kok. These colleagues were instrumental in bridging the gap between clinical mental health and pastoral care during what many consider the hospital’s "Golden Era."
Key Collaborators and Colleagues
Historical records and personal accounts from the late 1970s and 1980s highlight several individuals who were either involved in the newsletter or part of the core chaplaincy team:
Ralph Ludwick: A notable figure who worked closely with Dr. Kok. He was a vocal admirer of the work being done through the chaplains' newsletter and contributed to its influence among local clergy.
Allen Jay Hoogewind: A member of the 1978–1979 Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) group. He worked alongside Dr. Kok during the foundational years of these educational initiatives.
The 1978–1979 CPE Cohort: This specific group was highly active in developing the pastoral outreach models used at Pine Rest. It included: Duane Visser, Pete Mans, Cleo Ludwick, and Bob Uken.
Bob Crumbley: He completed a significant CPE internship under Dr. Kok’s direct mentorship, helping to carry out the mission of providing "wise care" for those suffering from mental illness.
Rev. Ralph Heynen: As a senior chaplain in the mid-20th century, he set the stage for the newsletter’s theological depth, often writing on Christian mercy and its application in psychiatric settings.
